Last night I finally had a chance to play with one of the new Artfelt Kits from Skacel. I watched the DVD and then was excited to try and create something with this easy felting technique. I'm happy to report that this was a lot of FUN and would be perfect for anyone, even for kids, and for those of us who are artistically challenged (pointing to myself). If you're looking for a winter craft to do with the kiddos, this is for you. First I pulled out all the goodies that were packed into my kit. You get A LOT of fiber in one of these bags. Both roving and pencil roving. The DVD gives good instructions and many ideas for projects. I decided to make an easy striped scarf, since I didn't have a whole lotta time. I had to round up a few supplies I had around the house; towels, water bottle, and an old pantyhose leg. Then I had to decide which of the pencil roving I was going to use in this project and break off the lengths of fiber (I actually cut too much). I cut the "magic" banana paper to the size desired and then started tacking the roving to it with a felting needle. You just have to tack it down. I decided to add some self fringes on the ends by twisting the ends together and tacking them down so they didn't touch. Once I got my scarf all tacked down it was time to spray it with water, roll it up, stuff it into the stocking, and toss it into the dryer. This is the far end of the scarf, before I'd finished twisting the fringe. After the scarf was sufficiently felted I ran boiling water over it to dissolve the banana paper and hung it to dry. This morning it was all finished and I'll have it at the shop tomorrow, so you can stop by and check it out. Look at all the materials I had left over. Enough for at least 2 more large projects. REMEMBER: We are having the representative from Skacel come to the shop and teach a class on this felting technique this winter. Check out our class schedule for more details. I'm sure that Joanne will have lots of tips and tricks to share with us. We'll have the kits available for sale, as well as extra roving and banana paper so you can have hours of fun creating felted works of art. Even if you decide not to take the class, all you need is a kit to get started. Each kit comes with a DVD slide show which will show you what you need to do to have success.
